These pistachio kunafa cups are one of my favorite desserts to make when I want something a little special but not too complicated.
They have that classic kunafa crunch from the kataifi pastry, filled with a light and creamy rose water filling. The crushed pistachios and honey on top bring everything together perfectly.

If you’ve never worked with kataifi pastry before, don’t worry. It’s really easy to handle and you basically just press it into a muffin tin to form little crispy cups.
The whole recipe comes together pretty quickly, and most of the time is just waiting for things to cool and set in the fridge.
If you love Middle Eastern desserts or just want to try something different, these little cups are a great place to start.
Why You’ll Love It
Crispy Meets Creamy in Every Bite – The shredded kataifi pastry bakes into a golden, crunchy nest that contrasts perfectly with the soft, fluffy rose water cream filling, giving you that satisfying texture combo that makes kunafa so addictive.

Individual Portions Without the Mess – Instead of slicing into a big tray of kunafa and watching it fall apart, these muffin-sized cups give everyone their own perfectly shaped serving that holds together beautifully.
No Syrup Soaking Required – Traditional kunafa needs a hot sugar syrup poured over it at just the right moment, but these cups skip that tricky step entirely and get their sweetness from the cream filling and honey-pistachio topping instead.
Recipe Ingredients
For the Cups
- 8 oz Shredded Kataifi Pastry (thawed)
- 1/3 cup Unsalted Butter (melted)
- 1 tbsp Granulated Sugar
For the Cream Filling
- 8 oz Cream Cheese (softened)
- 1/2 cup Powdered Sugar
- 1/2 cup Heavy Cream
- 1 tbsp Rose Water
For the Topping
- 1/2 cup Crushed Pistachios
- 2 tbsp Honey
- 1 tbsp Melted Butter
Directions
Step 1
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 12-cup muffin tin and set aside.
Step 2
Pull the kataifi pastry apart into loose shreds in a large bowl. Pour the melted butter over the pastry and toss with the granulated sugar until every strand is evenly coated.
Step 3
Divide the buttered pastry among the 12 muffin cups, pressing it firmly into the bottom and up the sides to form little nests. Bake for 14 to 16 minutes until deep golden and crispy. Let them cool completely in the tin.
Step 4
While the cups cool, beat the cream cheese and powdered sugar together with an electric mixer until smooth, about 2 minutes. Add the heavy cream and rose water, then beat on medium-high speed until thick and fluffy, about 2 to 3 minutes.
Step 5
Pipe or spoon the cream filling generously into each cooled kunafa cup, mounding it slightly above the rim.
Step 6
In a small bowl, toss the crushed pistachios with honey and melted butter. Spoon this pistachio topping over each filled cup, pressing it gently into the cream.
Step 7
Refrigerate the cups for at least 30 minutes before serving. Carefully remove from the muffin tin and serve chilled.

My Tips
Shred the Kataifi Really Well
When you pull apart the kataifi pastry, take your time and really separate every strand. If you leave clumps, those thick spots won’t crisp up evenly in the oven and you’ll get chewy patches in your cups.
The goal is a bowl full of loose, fluffy strands that look almost like a pile of thin noodles. Once they’re separated, the melted butter can coat every single piece and that’s what gives you that perfect golden crunch all the way through.
Press the Cups Firmly
When you press the pastry into the muffin tin, really push it down hard into the bottom and up the sides. Use the back of a spoon or even the bottom of a small glass to compact it. If the walls are too thin or loose, they’ll crumble apart the second you try to fill them.

Make the bottom a little thicker than the sides so the cup has a sturdy base. You want something that can actually hold the weight of the cream filling without collapsing.
If you notice any gaps or thin spots, grab a few extra strands and patch them in before baking.
Let the Cups Cool Completely Before Filling
This one matters a lot. If you spoon that cream filling into warm cups, it will melt and turn soupy instead of staying thick and fluffy. The cups need to be fully cooled to room temperature.
Leave them in the muffin tin while they cool so they hold their shape. It usually takes about 20-25 minutes. You can speed things up by putting the tin on a wire rack so air flows underneath.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I make the kunafa cups ahead of time without them getting soggy?
You can bake the kataifi cups a day in advance and store them in an airtight container at room temperature. They’ll stay nice and crispy as long as you don’t fill them yet.
Only pipe in the cream filling a few hours before you plan to serve them. If the filled cups sit in the fridge overnight, the pastry will start to soften from the moisture in the cream.
